We mourn the loss of Dr Ewald Rathke

Dr Ewald Rathke 1926 – 2024

Dr Ewald Rathke, director emeritus of the Frankfurter Kunstverein from 1962 to 1970, passed away on 5 May 2024.

From 1959 to 1961, he was managing director of the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf. From 1970, he ran his own art dealership in Frankfurt am Main. Ewald Rathke’s expertise included 20th century modern art.

With the first exhibition curated for the Frankfurter Kunstverein on Edvard Munch (1962), he positioned the institution as a prominent international art institution. Other important projects followed, including those on Paula Modersohn-Becker (1963), Otto Dix (1967), August Macke (1969) and Wols (1965/1966).

The Board of Directors, the management and the colleagues remember Dr Rathke and his work for the Frankfurter Kunstverein with great respect and express their heartfelt condolences to the family.
